Dr. Sue's Recipes for the table

It’s cold and damp in the San Francisco Bay Area in January. I’ve discovered oatmeal.

I always thought I hated oatmeal because it reminded me of slop. We had it often when we lived in a commune. Washing the oatmeal pot was torture, sticky, gluey gunk on the bottom, greasy sink, pot too big, organic soap that didn’t really suds.

I lived for twenty five years without oatmeal because of this food trauma. But that’s all behind me.

Oatmeal is a yummy morning treat. Shame on those food producers who make instant oatmeal in paper packets. If you have a microwave, you can make a bowl of oatmeal using whole oats. Here’s how.

Oatmeal

For one person:

  • ¼ - ½ cup rolled oats (depends how much you want to eat)
  • ½ - 1 cup water (twice as much water as oats)
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon
  • ½ cut up apple with skin or ¼ cup raisins or any fruit and nuts that inspire you

Mix ingredients in microwave proof bowl.
Microwave on high for 2 minutes
Let rest one minute.

If you like, add honey for sweetness or butter. I like it without additions – but that’s up to you.
If you don’t have a microwave, I can’t say how to proceed. I guess you’ll have to get a pot sticky and gluey. If you have other ideas, please email me at
